With every difficulty there is ease…

I woke up to the devastating news this morning that Bashir Makhtal, the Canadian citizen who has been held for over a year in an Ethiopian prison, has been formally charged with terrorism-related offenses for his alleged connection to the Ogaden National Liberation Front, a rebel group in the ethnically Somali region. The ONLF is [...]

This is our moment

I don’t have the words to describe it, but for the first time in history there is a black man on route to becoming the president of the United States of America. After centuries of blacks being enslaved, discriminated against, and not being able to vote, one might be president. And like a sucker I [...]

And Thou Seest Mankind Entering The Religion Of Allah In Crowds

…. Celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness: For He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy) {110:2-3)

VATICAN CITY — Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism as the world’s largest religion, the Vatican newspaper said Sunday.

What Is The Face Of Collateral Damage?

Article on Somalia from CounterPunch yesterday. It’s not that long, so I’ve posted the entire thing.

Two days ago we woke to the news that the U.S. had bombed the town of Dhobley, Somalia near the border with Kenya. According to a NYTimes [...]

Over the past four days, at least 96 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, a third of them children.
In other news, [...]

Hmmmm

So it looks like they’ve found large reserves of oil and gas near Kosovo last month, in Albania. It’s a huge find, and I’d imagine it’s something that would have a major effect on Kosovo’s independence and Serbia and Russia’s unwillingness to recognize it. Interesting when you consider American interests in the region. Here’s some [...]

The World’s Forgotten Catastrophe

I didn’t get a chance to share it earlier, but the Independent published an article on Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia this past weekend. Apparently Somalia now has the most refugees in the world, subhanAllah. The article gives a pretty decent background on Somalia since the US mission in the early 90s, through the Islamic Courts [...]

15 Seconds of E-Fame

WordPress has this neat feature where you can see where people clicked from to get on to your page. So you can imagine my surprise when I saw all of these views coming in from the CNN website. I clicked the link, only to find an article on the Turkey hijab ban, and at the [...]

Turkey Drops Hijab Ban

Amazing how this is news from a Muslim country. Having a similar ban on hijabs would be unimaginable in Canadian universities, and rightfully so. Article from the Toronto Star:
ANKARA–Turkey’s Islamist-rooted ruling AK Party and a key opposition party agreed yesterday to co-operate to lift a ban on the wearing of the Islamic headscarf in universities.
The [...]
